Mother’s Day Campaign for Emotional Health

This campaign is really important to me. I hope that you will give it your attention. Happy Mother’s Day.

screen-shot-2010-05-05-at-53459-pm

Many experts agree that early attachment – the connection between infants and caregivers during the earliest months – is critical to developing healthy emotional relationships throughout life. By creating a strong foundation of security, attachment fosters development and determines the quality of future social relationships. That’s why we’re kicking off a campaign this Mother’s Day to promote early attachment.  The goal of the campaign is to distribute Early Moments Matter, a toolkit created with leading experts to explain the importance and practice of attachment, to all new and expecting parents.

This Mother’s Day, we hope you’ll join us in a movement to give every child the best chance at emotional wellness.  Stay tuned for more information on when these kits will be available to the public – coming soon.

RE: Underage Drinking – Request for Town Hall Meetings
(week of March 22, 2010)
Sponsored and Supported by SAMHSA
Response Requested by February 5, 2010
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) is seeking the Academy’s collaboration on a project to address the underage drinking issue. They will be supporting more than 2,000 Town Hall meetings across the country this spring and are asking local organizations/chapters to schedule these meetings during the week of March 22, 2010, in an effort to increase participation in the annual Alcohol Awareness Month (in April).
As a leader in your AAP chapter, we are asking for your participation in this project. A stipend of $500 will be provided to your chapter to help defray expenses related to holding these meetings. In addition, a variety of online resources will be made available to you to support and facilitate the planning of these events. The Academy is also offering a consultant to assist you, Dr. Richard Heyman, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in these types of events. He is currently our liaison to the Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free and has worked closely with First Lady of Ohio, Hope Taft.
Further information about this initiative, along with materials on how to plan a local event and a clickable map that provides details about every registered event can be found at http://www.stopalcoholabuse.gov/townhall/.
For the past few years, the Academy has been involved at the local level with The Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free efforts to combat underage drinking, and the local chapters’ efforts have been very successful. The state Governors’ Spouses group has been very active and helpful in assisting local organizations get their projects underway. The Academy could get you in touch with the Governors’ Spouses for collaboration.
We urge you to get involved with this effort by contacting Karen Smith by February 5th at the AAP national office at 800/433-9016 ext 7941 or by emailing her at ksmith@aap.org.
Thank you.
